Tales of the Nordics

In “Tales of the Nordics”, Ensemble Aurōrae shift the boundaries between classical and nordic folk music as well as tradition and avantgarde. In different duo and trio formations, they not only present music well known to us but also entirely new combinations of string sounds, thus creating an entirely new experience of the classical ensemble. Next to the classical violin they also present the very special soundscapes of a typical Norwegian folk instrument from the Hardanger Region - the hardanger fiddle - an instrument yet largely unknown to the European audience.

“Tales of the Nordics” sends the audience on a journey through the musical landscape of Scandinavia and blends folk music tradition with classical repertoire. Alongside compositions by Edvard Grieg, Jean Sibelius and Johan Halvorsen, Ensemble Aurōrae also present works by composers who were inspired by the nordic countries, such as by the Belgian composer Eugène Ysaÿe, who composed his highly virtuosic “Légende Norvégienne” during his travels through Norway. In addition, the singing voices of the cello and violin tell Nordic fairy tales in various song arrangements, and last but not least, the moderation of the artists themselves leads the audience through the world of mystics and legends on which the music of the North is based.
